I was sitting and chatting to my mom a couple of minutes ago and I said something that I always say, I have said this saying for years and years. I have heard others say this saying countless times in my life. My mom and I were chatting about being sick, my mom is quite ill at the moment, but thank the good Lord, she is on the mend. I said to her that normally by now we have all been sick, my daughter is usually the first to get sick and then she infects the rest of us with flu, but this year we haven’t been sick yet, so I then said ‘touch wood’…

Many of you may have heard this saying before, but for those who haven’t…this is what it means.

Touch wood: said in order to prevent a confident statement from bringing bad luck.

“I haven’t been sick yet, touch wood”

“…said while touching something wooden, to avert superstitious bad luck from what has just been said.”

“…The expression is used superstitiously to avert the possibility that something just mentioned (if bad) might not occur, or (if it is a good thing) might occur. The action may or may not be performed, depending on how literally the speaker adheres to the superstition. If it is taken literally, it is usual to attempt physically to touch some wooden object whilst, or shortly after, exclaiming touch wood. Failure to find and touch a wooden item within a short time may be considered ominous, and cause mental distress to the person involved.”

You can’t believe in superstition and be a believer of Jesus Christ…#justsaying

Earlier this week my Father sent me a devotional via my dad, called ‘Daring to imagine, by Rick Warren’, Day two of this devotional says, “Your imagination shapes your life. In other words, the way you think is going to affect the way you feel, and if you want to change the way you act you need to change the way you think. The Bible says in Proverbs 23:7 says, ‘for as a man thinks in his heart, so he is.’ KJV. It is Gods way of saying He wants you to understand that how He works in your life is through your thoughts. For instance, if the person who says, ‘I can’t do this’ and person who says ‘I can do this’, are both right. Because if you think you can’t, you can’t and if you think you can, you can.”

This all got me thinking. For years on end I have always touched wood when speaking about something that hasn’t happened or I have said “Murphy’s law this will happen now. Murphy’s law is an adage or epigram that is typically stated as: “Anything that can go wrong will go wrong”.

If only we knew how powerful our brains are. If only we knew what God has placed in each of us. Declaring these absurd statements is basically saying, sorry God but I don’t trust You and Your law, I’m going to go with a man-made stupid law because I can only comprehend that! God’s word says in Proverbs 3 vs 5-6 “Trust in the Lord with all your heart; do not depend on your own understanding. Seek His will in all you do, and He will show you which path to take.” NLT.  You only need to trust in Jesus!!!

We need to stop putting our trust in things of this world and stupid sayings. Rather put your trust in the one who breathed the stars into creation. Read Psalm 33 vs 6, over and over again. That’s who we are privileged to call Father. We need to trust our Father in all we do, He knows best for us because he planned our lives out before we were even born, Jeremiah 1 vs 5 “”Before I formed you in the womb I knew you, before you were born I set you apart; I appointed you as a prophet to the nations.” NIV

Proverbs 13:16 a says… “Wise people think before they act.”

Let’s be wise, let’s think before we speak in ALL we say and do. Let’s give Our Father in Heaven all the glory He so deserves and trust in Him and His Word. Read your Bible, if you ‘believe’ there is power in the saying touch wood and Murphy’s law, just imagine what true power you will find in Gods word. Read it, Believe it and Live it!!!
